Recently I had the opportunity to visit the former home of Jean Sibelius. As I stepped through the doorway and entered the house where this famous Finnish composer lived, I was greeted by a young woman who placed into my hands written information about this remarkable man’s life and music. I was grateful to learn about this great composer as I stood in the setting of his home. Not only did the information offer insight into this man’s life, family, and musical creations, but most strikingly, his mind.
I was amazed to read that before a note was ever put to paper or played on a piano, Jean Sibelius’ now famous symphonies were created in his mind. There, in his mind, he carefully planned them and knew them intimately from start to finish. They existed in his mind before they ever existed on this earth.
My thoughts turned to our wonderful God, and His great masterpiece of creation.
The Bible reveals to us that we existed in the mind of God before He created us. Ephesians 1:4 reveals to us that God has chosen us in Him in love before the foundation of the world. And David writes in Psalms 139:16 (NKJV):
Your eyes saw my substance, yet being unformed. And in Your book they all were written, The days fashioned for me, When as yet there were none of them.
Oh the depth of the love that God has for us, that He knew us, loved us, chose us, and has planned the symphony of our lives from start to finish, before He even created the universe!
I am thankful for the experience of visiting Jean Sibelius’ home. But I am even more thankful for the household of God, where I am not a visitor, but a member. Not a spectator, but a participant. Into God’s house, we can come freely and learn of Him and gain insight into His mind through written information He has provided to us. Through Jesus, the entrance fee has already been paid.
